Mission: Raid De Kitchen accomplished!
Today I woke up, started the computer and saw that in the BIOS POST screen, the DVD drive was detected, but showed garbage characters in the name. A case of loose wires, maybe. I unplugged the comp, reseated the connectors and started the computer again – the name of the DVD drive was showing up well now. But something seemed to take a bit too long in the POST, and after which I was greeted with this:
MediaShield ROM BIOS 6.73
Copyright (C) 2006 NVIDIA Corp. Detecting array …
A total WTF!? moment for me. I have not set up RAID on this system and out of the blue, where this *this* come from? The computer stay stuck there for many agonizing minutes. After which I rebooted and tried changing settings in BIOS, which I found were already disabled.
Huh? If the BIOS says RAID is disabled then what is this?
Lot of research turned up no help, only unanswered questions. Finally did what I should had done first – disconnect the DVD drive and boot – that worked. Seems like I have a faulty drive and all I needed to do was disconnect it, everything went back to normal.
While driving around Northern Maharashtra today, I noticed a familiar sight; people filling up water from water tankers. The water sources in the village have dried up and trucks are needed to get water from bigger towns or wells that still have water.I feel their pain and frustration as I used to fetch water in 30 liter cans on bicycle when we stayed at our bunglow in the village on the outskirts of the city. However what I saw made me realize once again why we face such shortage. People were wasting so much water! Streams had started flowing from the water spilled when filling up their cans and vessels. Sometimes I wonder how they don’t realize their folly? and this scene is not rare, these people cry that they don’t have water to drink. And when the tanker comes to the village, half of it goes down the gutter thatnks to the same people.
A few years ago, I was supposed to get something important done, i had been working in night shifts and sleeping during day. As my parents were visiting the UK, they asked my aunt to call me up in the morning to make sure I’ve woken up and am getting the work done. (yes, I am good at turning off all alarms in sleep…)Anyway, I woke up by myself, got the work done and was lazying around in the evening when I got a call from aunt. She asked if I had done the work, I said yes. Then she mentioned, ‘good, so the call in the morning worked!’ … ‘which call?’ After confirming multiple times that I had not recieved any phone call, she started wondering, “okay, so who did I call early in the morning and thrash because he was being lazy about getting up?” Apparently she had lectured this poor guy for 20 minutes before he agreed to get all work done by noon. I’ll never know who he was!
