Skin Editing — How Much Is Right?

with 3 comments

What would you prefer?

Original: noisy and contrasty image
Edit 1: with blemishes _almost_ removed, but retaining texture
Edit 2: blurred image with barely any blemishes and no texture either

I’ve noticed photos with skin looking all plastic-y being passed around a lot. Getting results as in Edit 1 takes efforts, yes, but it looks so much more natural.

It’s just a matter of using the clone/heal tool a little more.

What software one uses doesn’t matter… as long as you have an equivalent of photoshop’s “heal” tool. Be prepared for a lot of clicking around 😉

So, what would you prefer?

  1. Definitely Edit 1.

  2. agree that edit 1 is more acceptable, but i’ve also noticed the skin tone getting lighter from the original to edit 1 to edit 2. is that intentional? i would consider it avoidable.

  3. The real tone is actually lighter, closer to Edit 1… I intentionally underexpose a little in difficult lighting (against the expose to right school of thought) – which makes original look darker. Edit 2 is lighter to mimic how the photo editors around here work, should had added that comment too, thanks for noticing.
